چکیده

The indirect boundary integral formulation is inspired by the potential theory which is usually applied to Laplace’s equation (scalar or vector). Considering the similarity between Laplace and the similarly elliptic linear elastostatic problem, we apply this mathematical tool to stress analysis. This forms a crucial ingredient in our meshbased fracture evolution algorithm. Here we briefly introduce the potential theory used for Laplace’s problem and then describe how we derive our elastostatic physical model.

Parallel Simulations of Dynamic Fracture Using Extrinsic Cohesive Elements

In this paper, we present a novel parallel implementation of extrinsic initially rigid cohesive elements in an explicit finite element solver designed for the simulation of dynamic fracture events. The implementation is based on activating instead of inserting the cohesive elements and uses ParFUM, a parallel framework specifically developed for simulations involving unstructured meshes. Aspect...

Real-Time Simulation of Deformation and Fracture of Stiff Materials

Existing techniques for real-time simulation of object deformation are well suited for animating soft materials like human tissue or two-dimensional systems such as cloth. However, simulation of deformation in malleable materials and fracture in brittle materials has only been done offline because the underlying equations of motion are numerically stiff, requiring many small steps in explicit i...

Finite Element Simulation of the Motion of a Rigid Body in a Fluid with Free Surface

In this work a finite element simulation of the motion of a rigid body in a fluid, with free surface, is described. A completely general referential description (of which both Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions are special cases) of an incompressible, Newtonian fluid is used. Such a description enables a distorting finite element mesh to be used for the deforming fluid domain. A new scheme fo...

A Discrete Model for Inelastic Deformation of Thin Shells

We introduce a method for simulating the inelastic deformation of thin shells: we model plasticity and fracture of curved, deformable objects such as light bulbs, egg-shells and bowls. Our novel approach uses triangle meshes yet evolves fracture lines unrestricted to mesh edges. We present a novel measure of bending strain expressed in terms of surface invariants such as lengths and angles. We ...

Graph-Based Fracture Models for Rigid Body Explosions

Explosions are one of the most powerful and devastating natural phenomena. The pressure front from the blast wave of an explosion can cause fracture of objects in its vicinity and create flying debris. In this thesis, I outline a previously proposed explosion model. An explosion is treated as a fluid with its behaviour governed by the Navier-Stokes equations and the gaseous products modeled usi...
